A little over a year ago I started keeping a small list of “monthly favorites”. The beauty of these lists is how free-form they can be, you make the rules! My lists have since grown to include anything and everything I’ve loved: a small thrifted tchotchke, digital or printed media, sensory experiences, a compelling question…

The joy of “collecting” and curating these monthly lists is almost meditative; they also serve as valuable reminders of how much magic we experience everyday — the compliment paid by a stranger, how good the sun feels on bare shoulders — but far too often seem to forget.

Why “Monthly Magpie”?

Alliteration is always tempting, but more than that, I like to imagine the equivalent excitement magpies (shiny-thing kleptomaniacs of the bird world) must get from their own collecting. Hence why it only felt fitting to name this monthly series in their honor.
